About Kanha -
The Kanha National Park, situated in the eastern sector of the central Indian Highlands, ranges over an area of 940 sq km in the Mailkal chain of hills. Kanha Tiger reserve consists of the National Park which forms the Core Zone and a Buffer zone around the core bringing the total area up to 1945 sq. km.
The altitude of the park varies between 450 metres and 950 metres above sea level. The two major rivers here are the Banjar and the Halon – in addition, numerous small tributaries break down through the hill gorges into the valleys, to meander through the meadows. The meadows, dotted with clumps of the great sal tree, lie interspersed with larger areas of Sal forest while at higher altitudes the bamboo becomes predominant.
Beside the Tigers for which Kanha is justly famous, the abundance of wildlife here is remarkable – the magnificient Gaur; The hardground Barasinga, the herd of Chital, and the ever present Langur. In all, some 22 species of large mammals are regularly found within the Park – and the birdlife is equally impressive.
Bhedaghat (भेड़ाघाट) is a town approx 20 kms from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh and is situated by the side of river Narmada. Its most famous sights are the Dhuandhar Falls, Marble Rocks, and the Chaunsath Yogini temple
The temple is one of the four major extant temples containing carvings of sixty four yogini, female yoga mystics. It was built in the 10th century under the Kalachuri empire. It commands a view of the whole area around and of the river flowing through the marble rocks.
Its major attraction is a waterfall known as Dhuandhar, which looks like smoke coming out of the river and therefore it got its name as "Dhuan(smoke)-dhar(flow of water)". Another major attraction which needs mention is 'Bandar Kodini', when one travels in between the marble rocks in a boat, the mountains at both the sides at one point come so close that the monkeys are able to jump across them, hence the name "Bandar Kodini". In a moonlit night, the travel between the marble rock mountains in a boat on the river Narmada is a heavenly site which should not be missed for anything.
